In the last five years, "green homes" construction has increased 500%. Developers and builders are not joining the green homes revolution purely out of a sense that it is the right thing to do. They can't afford to be left behind by the future consumer or customer demand for this type of construction. By the year 2010, it is projected that 10% of the annual nonresidential construction will be "green". Consumers are finding that green technology and construction materials will add between 2 and 5% of the total cost, a premium quickly recaptured by energy savings.
Common midrange and luxury homes now found in green residential buildings include: nontoxic paint and finishes, wheatboard cabinetry, low-flow showerhead and toilets, wood floors of Brazilian cherry, Caribbean walnut, and other plantation – grown varieties. High – efficiency heat and cooling systems, recycled and locally bought building materials, rain and waste water capturement for toilets and landscaping, and window panels that double as sunshades and solar type generators.
